Manila: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will further intensify its operations against 'colorum' or unregistered vehicles after 252 vehicles were apprehended in June.
According to Philippines News Agency, LTO Executive Director Greg Pua stated there has been positive feedback from the LTO's anti-colorum drive, especially after impounding unregistered vehicles and prosecuting drivers and operators. Pua explained that this initiative could either be deterring operators from engaging in illegal activities or prompting them to find ways to avoid arrest.
A recent LTO memorandum has strengthened the anti-colorum campaign by requiring a court order for the release of impounded vehicles, even after the penalty is paid. Pua emphasized the importance of public cooperation in combating colorum vehicles, urging citizens to upload evidence of violations on social media.
Pua acknowledged the vital role netizens play in maintaining road discipline, noting that many licenses have been suspended or revoked due to viral posts. He also cautioned against using colorum public utility vehicles (PUVs), which lack insurance, potentially leaving passengers to cover expenses in the event of an accident. In contrast, registered PUVs provide insurance coverage up to PHP400,000 for death and PHP100,000 for injuries.
The LTO reports that legitimate PUV operators are losing about 30 percent of their daily income to colorum vehicles. The government aims to address this issue through the LTO's intensified anti-colorum operations.
