LTO Revokes License of Jeepney Driver in Fatal Commonwealth Crash

Manila: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has revoked the license of a jeepney driver involved in a fatal road crash along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City on April 13. In a statement on Thursday, LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza II said the decision is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to go after erring motorists as part of the government's road safety campaign.

According to Philippines News Agency, the driver of the passenger jeepney was found guilty of reckless driving during the investigation conducted by the LTO. The driver was fined with a maximum penalty of PHP2,000. Mendoza stated, "I also approved the revocation of the driver's license of the jeepney driver for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle."

In the decision signed by Mendoza, the jeepney "clearly violated" the rule on reckless driving for traveling fast and outside the designated lane for public utility vehicles (PUV) along Commonwealth Avenue. Other circumstances that led to the decision include the driver's failure to reduce speed on the downhill part of the road and the resulting road crash.

The investigation revealed that the jeepney was seen hitting another vehicle while traveling at speed along Commonwealth Avenue. The collision resulted in the jeepney overturning, killing two college students who were thrown from the vehicle and injuring 16 other passengers. Mendoza emphasized that this incident should serve as a lesson about road safety and discipline.
