DPWH Considers Increasing Load Capacity for Biliran Bridge

Biliran: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is considering raising the load capacity of Biliran Bridge following the substantial completion of major repair activities in the past four months. In a phone interview, Irwin Antonio, officer-in-charge of the DPWH Biliran District Engineering Office, said a load rating capacity assessment is set to be conducted soon on the infrastructure.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DPWH regional office, in coordination with the Bureau of Design from the DPWH central office, will conduct the load rating capacity assessment. This assessment aims to determine the current load-bearing capacity of the bridge and evaluate whether it can safely accommodate vehicles heavier than the original 15-ton limit.

The PHP28.9-million rehabilitation project, which began in February this year, includes the replacement of corroded bolts, damaged steel members and plates, and the installation of new finger-type expansion joints and other essential bridge components. These efforts are intended to restore the structural integrity of Biliran's only land access to Leyte Island.

Antonio noted that the recommendation of bridge engineers following the assessment will determine if controlled or limited heavier vehicle crossings may be permitted. Since December 23, 2024, only light vehicles (five tons or below), including passenger vans and sports utility vehicles, have been allowed to cross the bridge. This restriction followed a viral video showing the bridge swaying due to defective components.

For heavy vehicles, barging services will continue to provide transport until the bridge is cleared for higher load capacities. Built in 1976, the Biliran Bridge serves as the only land connection for Biliran residents to mainland Leyte province.
