Manila: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended the license of a modern jeepney driver who was caught on video cursing and making obscene gestures at a traffic enforcer at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). The incident gained attention after the video went viral on social media.
According to Philippines News Agency, the LTO issued a 90-day suspension of the driver's license, identified by the license plate NGB9091, while an investigation is conducted. The driver has been summoned to appear before the LTO at its central office in Quezon City on October 22 to explain why his license should not be revoked.
In a statement, acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez urged drivers to maintain their composure and adhere strictly to traffic laws to ensure public safety and order. "Sa halip, laging pairalin ang wastong asal sa pagma-maneho at striktong pag-sunod sa batas trapiko para sa kaayusan at kaligtasan ng lahat," Lopez advised.
The LTO has also called upon the registered owner of the jeepney to provide a comment on why the company should not be held accountable for employing a driver who displayed discourteous behavior, as per Title IV (7) of DOTC Joint Administrative Order 2014-01.
Moreover, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has summoned a representative from the San Dionisio Transport Service Cooperative, the operator of the jeepney, to appear before the LTFRB in Quezon City on October 27.
The video, uploaded to Facebook by 'BJ King TV,' shows the driver engaged in a heated dispute with a traffic enforcer. The enforcer had instructed the driver to vacate the area due to a no-loitering policy, but the driver defied the order, using offensive language and gestures.
