Pagudpud: A Luzon Hornbill (penelopides manillae), locally known as 'Tarictic', was rescued after being found with injuries on the lower part of its wings. The incident occurred on Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) officer Jose Morata confirmed the rescue. Resident Exequiel Dalumay of Barangay Saud spotted the injured bird and turned it over to the MENRO. Morata stated, "We will take custody of the bird for the meantime until it is fit for release."
The Luzon Tarictic Hornbill is native to the forests of Luzon and nearby islands in northern Philippines. Poaching, illegal hunting, and possession without proper documents of such species are prohibited under RA 9147, also known as the 'Wildlife Resources Protection and Conservation Act.'
The MENRO has urged the public to report and turn over any wildlife species found without proper documentation.
Pagudpud, particularly the Kalbario-Patapat Natural Park, is a significant bird area being promoted as a bird-watching destination in Luzon. The park, known for its intact ecosystems, is designated as a key biodiversity area and is part of the East-Asia-Pacific flyway for migratory birds. Over 18 bird species, including the Tarictic Hornbill, are commonly observed in the area alongside other raptors.
