Makati city: Filipino topseed Tennielle Madis eyes a better performance in the girls' singles of the J60 PHINMA International Junior Tennis Championships 2 at the Manila Polo Club shell court.
According to Philippines News Agency, the 17-year-old member of the Philippine Tennis Academy fell to No. 8 Taiwanese Yen-Ni Chiang, 1-6, 4-6, in the quarterfinals of the first leg last week. "I have to do my best so I can improve my ranking," Madis said in an interview on Tuesday. She is currently No. 202 in the ITF Junior rankings.
Madis will face Korean Mi Na Lee in the first round on Wednesday. Other locals seeing action are No. 6 Stefi Marithe Aludo, Jana Jelena Nicole Diaz, and wild cards Arriana Reign Maglana, Ave Maria Policarpio, and Louraine Jallorina; and qualifiers Lilith Macaria Rufino, Chiara Bate, Jayden Reece Ballado, and Erynne Francesca Ong.
Rufino survived Carolina Fandino, 6-1, 4-6 (10-4); Bate walked over Felicia Araneta; Ballado downed Dania Bulanadi, 6-2, 6-1; and Ong prevailed over Mikaela Rose Ngu, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Madis and Aludo, seeded third in the first leg, bagged the doubles title over No. 2 Taiwanese pair Yuhan Chen and Yu-Ning Tsai, 6-2, 7-5.
Aludo, seeded seventh in the singles, ousted No. 2 Aoi Watanabe, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the semis. In the finals, she lost to No. 3 Korean Yesung Choo, 2-6, 2-6.
