Magnitude 5 Earthquake Hits Davao Occidental, Aftershocks Possible

Davao Occidental: A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Davao Occidental Monday night, causing concern among residents and authorities.

According to Philippines News Agency, the tectonic earthquake struck 91 kilometers southeast of Sarangani Island at 6:48 p.m., with a depth of 82 km. As of now, there have been no reported intensities, which are traditionally gauged based on reports from people who felt the earthquake.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded an instrumental intensity I in the areas of Malungon and Alabel in Sarangani. Unlike traditional intensity reports, instrumental intensity is quantified using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Phivolcs has indicated that while aftershocks are possible, the magnitude 5 earthquake is unlikely to cause significant damage. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain vigilant and stay informed of any further developments.
