Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized the necessity for enhanced regional cooperation and people-centered progress during the Special Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit. He advocated for development efforts that yield tangible benefits for local communities.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos engaged with Brunei Darussalam's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He stressed that regional cooperation should transcend mere economic objectives, aiming to generate real and enduring improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.
In his opening remarks, Marcos stated, "This vision is not merely a roadmap for economic integration, it is a promise to our people that development will be meaningful, sustainable, and felt in their daily lives." He highlighted the ongoing programs and projects under the BIMP-EAGA framework that are fostering livelihoods, enhancing connectivity, and expanding opportunities across member economies.
Marcos further noted that the true value of regional cooperation is realized when it elevates local communities. He urged leaders to maintain collaborative efforts and ensure that regional strategies translate into lasting impacts for future generations.
BIMP-EAGA, established in 1994, is a subregional cooperation initiative focused on accelerating economic development in less-developed and geographically remote areas of the four member countries. This is achieved through improved connectivity, trade, investment, tourism, and infrastructure collaboration. The summit is part of the Philippines' hosting of the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings.
