Marcos Advocates for Enhanced Defense to Protect Philippine Territory

Makati city: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is emphasizing the need for a fortified defense strategy to safeguard Philippine territory amidst escalating regional tensions, as announced by Malaca±ang on Friday. This initiative follows Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro's revelation that Marcos has instructed a revamp of the nation's defense framework, highlighting the Philippines' position at the forefront of challenges to the international order, particularly due to China's unlawful activities in the West Philippine Sea.

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro reiterated Marcos' unwavering dedication to defending the country's sovereignty. During a Palace press briefing, Castro quoted the President, emphasizing the administration's firm stance: "The President said we will not surrender a square inch of our territory. So, hindi tayo titiklop sa ating pagpuprotekta sa parte ng karapatan natin, ng bawat Pilipino, at ng interes ng ating bansa (we will not falter in protecting the rights of every Filipino and the interests of our nation)."

Castro elaborated that the administration's focus on bolstering the country's defense capabilities extends beyond merely securing the Philippine borders. It also aims at fortifying internal resilience, which is crucial for the nation's overall security and stability. The strategy includes fostering alliances with countries that share similar values and objectives, enhancing diplomatic and defense collaboration.

The President's vision, Castro explained, is to "expand and strengthen our defense forces while coordinating with countries that have the same goals and principles." This approach, she noted, is essential for the nation's protection and the development of internal resilience, which is vital for the Philippines' sustained security.

In a related address to the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines in Makati City, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro underscored the Department of National Defense's priority to develop strategic bases. He also highlighted plans to engage in government-to-government arrangements for defense procurements and joint industrial production, which are pivotal steps in realizing the administration's defense strategy.
