World Surfing League Qualifying Series Unfolds on Siargao’s Cloud 9

Siargao: The excitement and charm of Philippine surfing take center stage Friday as the Siargao International 6000 Surfing Cup kicks off in General Luna, Surigao del Norte.

According to Philippines News Agency, a total of 179 athletes from China, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and host Philippines are participating in the highest-ranking World Surf League (WSL) qualifying series ever held in the country. This event is rapidly establishing the Philippines as a premier destination for professional surf competitions.

Earlier this year, the World Surf League staged the World Junior Championships in La Union. The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairperson, Patrick Gregorio, expressed gratitude to the WSL for selecting Siargao as the primary venue for this major global surfing event.

Gregorio highlighted the significance of sports tourism, stating, "The biggest tourism events in the world are sporting events, and this is the work of PSC under my leadership. The longer we can do this, the better it will be for the country, especially with support from local government and the WSL."

The event also sees participation from top surfers, including Filipinos John Mark Tokong and British-Japanese Sky Brown. WSL Asia Pacific (APAC) president Andrew Stark emphasized the impact of the event on local youth, saying, "It's powerful for kids of this community to see what the possibilities are, what the best surfers in the world are doing."

The qualifying series offers a total prize of AUD 50,000 (roughly PHP 1.9 million), enhancing the prestige and competitiveness of the global professional surfing event. Stark noted the dual benefits of such events, stating, "These sporting events bring a lot to the community from a sport perspective and economically as well."

The press conference was attended by key figures such as WSL APAC Tour Director Ty Sorati, General Luna Vice Mayor Romina Rusillon-Sejulga, SDMI Sports Technical Director John Carby, Siargao Island Surfers Association president Nildie Blancada, and Janice Regino, representing Surigao Del Norte.
