Marcos Advocates for Grassroots Sports Development, Commends Filipino Champions

Quezon city: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has pledged to bolster sports development nationwide by committing full support to programs aimed at nurturing future champions, starting from the grassroots level. In his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA), delivered before a joint session of Congress at the Batasang Pambansa Complex, Marcos emphasized the importance of investing in sports and athletes across the country.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos announced the launch of a new national sports development program that will commence in schools, marking the reintroduction of sports clubs and intramurals in all public schools. The President highlighted upcoming key events such as the Palarong Pambansa and Batang Pinoy Games, to be held in General Santos City, as integral components of his administration's sports initiatives.

Marcos also acknowledged the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) for their roles in maintaining support for national sports development and assisting athletes. He encouraged young athletes to draw inspiration from Filipino global sports icons like Manny Pacquiao, Olympic gold medalists Hidilyn Diaz and Carlos Yulo, and other athletes who have brought pride to the nation.

In a lighthearted moment, Marcos humorously referred to Philippine National Police chief, Gen. Nicolas Torre III, as a 'new champion', likening him to celebrated Filipino sports figures. Torre was declared "winner by default" in a charity boxing match with Davao City acting Mayor Sebastian Duterte.

Additionally, the President lauded the Philippine Men's Curling Team for their historic gold medal victory at the Asian Winter Games, despite the country's tropical climate. Marcos noted that Filipino athletes have not only brought joy to the public but have also deepened national pride and identity.
