Sydney: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Friday pledged to enhance the Philippines-Korea relationship, reaffirming their commitment to defense, trade, and regional security during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lee began the discussions by acknowledging the Philippines' support during the Korean War, highlighting the enduring friendship between the two nations. He expressed gratitude for the sacrifices of Filipino soldiers, emphasizing that Seoul would "never forget" their contributions.
Marcos, in his response, conveyed appreciation for the partnership between the two countries, noting the steady progress in their strategic alliance. He highlighted key areas of collaboration, including a bilateral free trade agreement and cooperation in defense and security.
The Philippine leader also mentioned the upcoming ASEAN chairship in 2026 as an opportunity to promote stability in the Indo-Pacific region. He extended an invitation to Lee to visit Manila, which Lee accepted, expressing his intent to strengthen ties further.
South Korea continues to be a vital trading partner and defense ally of the Philippines, contributing significantly to investments in energy, transport, and digital infrastructure. The bilateral relationship was formally elevated to a "strategic partnership" last year.
