Quezon city: Acting Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has mandated all police commanders to ensure robust police visibility and prompt response to any calls for assistance as millions of Filipinos commence their journey to bus terminals and other transportation hubs for the observance of this year's All Saints' and All Souls Days, commonly known as 'Undas'.
According to Philippines News Agency, on Thursday night, Nartatez personally conducted surprise inspections at various bus terminals in Quezon City to assess the deployment of police officers and their readiness to handle any unforeseen incidents. This action aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to guarantee safe and comfortable travel for all Filipinos during Undas.
Nartatez emphasized the importance of implementing the preparations made for Undas on the ground. He stated, "The goal is to ensure safe and comfortable travel for all our kababayan, most of whom will travel to their home provinces." The focus is on maintaining a strong police presence at transportation hubs, thoroughfares, cemeteries, memorial parks, and churches to effectively address any situations that may arise.
In addition to these locations, police commanders have been instructed to secure tourist spots and other areas where people are likely to gather, as many Filipinos plan to utilize the long weekend for bonding with friends and relatives. Over 50,000 police officers have been deployed to safeguard the annual observance, with a significant number stationed at transportation hubs, churches, and cemeteries through Police Assistance Desks.
Nartatez stated that the PNP is on heightened alert, aiming to optimize the deployment of personnel, logistics, and finances. "Ibubuhos natin dito sa security operations upang mapanatili ang Undas na tahimik at matiwasay," he added, highlighting the commitment to ensuring a peaceful Undas.
Police commanders are also working closely with barangay officials to secure residential communities and business establishments throughout the Undas period. Coordination with bus companies is ongoing to ensure that drivers and conductors are prepared for the long journeys ahead.
The heightened alert and police visibility will be maintained until November 3. The PNP has also advised the public to stay vigilant against petty crimes, adhere to traffic rules, and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through PNP hotlines.
