Marcos Commits to Rehabilitation of Earthquake-Damaged Heritage Sites in Cebu

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has pledged that the rehabilitation of heritage sites and structures damaged by the recent magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu province will proceed as part of the relief and recovery efforts. This commitment follows reports of significant damage to establishments and heritage sites, impacting over 900 workers.

According to Philippines News Agency, during a situation briefing in Bogo City, Cebu, Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco informed President Marcos about the extensive damage caused by the earthquake. In response, President Marcos outlined a phased approach to recovery, starting with search and rescue operations, followed by relief efforts, and concluding with rehabilitation, including the restoration of heritage areas.

During the briefing with local officials and heads of government agencies, President Marcos emphasized the ongoing nature of the operation, stating that while not everyone can return to normalcy immediately, efforts will continue to ensure people can resume work, access medical care, have food, and secure housing.

President Marcos visited several impacted sites in Bogo City, including the Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish Church of St. Vicente Ferrer in Bungtod village, which collapsed during the earthquake. He also visited collapsed housing units at SM Cares Village in Polambato village, the damaged City of Bogo Science and Arts Academy in Cogon village, and the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Taytayan village.

The President reiterated his directive to government agencies to expedite the delivery of assistance to affected communities, underscoring the importance of a coordinated response to aid recovery.
