Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has instructed all government agencies to collaborate with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in orchestrating the nationwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 'Thrilla in Manila.' This historic boxing match, held in 1975, featured a legendary clash between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
According to Philippines News Agency, the directive was formalized through Memorandum Circular (MC) 99, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin. The commemoration, scheduled from October 26 to 31, aims to emphasize the sporting and cultural landmark that significantly raised the Philippines' profile on the global stage and remains a high point in boxing history.
The circular mandates all government agencies and instrumentalities, including government-owned or -controlled corporations, to provide full support and assistance. Additionally, local government units, non-government organizations, and the private sector are encouraged to participate actively in ensuring the celebration's success.
The 'Thrilla in Manila,' hosted at the Araneta Coliseum on October 1, 1975, is widely acclaimed as one of the most intense and brutal fights in boxing history. Muhammad Ali emerged victorious when Joe Frazier's chief second, Eddie Futch, decided to halt the fight at the end of the 14th round. This bout concluded the trilogy between Ali and Frazier, with Ali winning two of the three encounters. The original event had the backing of President Marcos Jr.'s father, the late Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.
The Presidential Palace has stated that the golden anniversary celebration necessitates active participation from both the government and the private sector to honor its profound sporting and cultural importance. The PSC, as the state sports agency, has been tasked to lead the event's direction and work alongside other organizations to promote Filipino pride through sports.
In related developments, boxing icon and former senator Manny Pacquiao recently met with President Marcos in Malaca±ang to seek support for his 'Thrilla in Manila 2' boxing card. This event is set to spotlight emerging Filipino fighters, with a headline bout featuring WBC minimumweight champion Melvin Jerusalem defending his title against Siyakholwa Kuse from South Africa, and a WBC super featherweight eliminator match between Mark Magsayo and Italy's Michael Magnesi.
