Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has expressed a cautious approach towards the imposition of a total ban on online gambling, emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive study on its social impacts and exploring possible alternatives. During a press briefing with the Philippine media following his state visit to India, President Marcos highlighted the complexity of the issue, suggesting that it requires a more nuanced strategy than merely enacting a ban.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos underscored the importance of involving various stakeholders, including the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), educators, parents, law enforcement, and addiction specialists, to understand and address the underlying problems associated with online gambling. He questioned whether the root issue lies with online gambling itself or the addiction it potentially fosters.
Marcos revealed plans for a government-organized policy forum, informally called a 'conclave,' aimed at gathering insights from relevant parties, such as the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). This forum will focus on evaluating the economic advantages against the social repercussions of online gambling activities. Reflecting on past experiences, such as the ban on e-sabong (online cockfight), Marcos questioned its efficacy in resolving addiction issues and hinted at the possibility of exploring alternative solutions.
President Marcos reiterated that any government policy on online gambling would be the result of thorough deliberation rather than hasty decisions. He acknowledged that while a ban might be an option, other, potentially more effective solutions should be considered to tackle the problem comprehensively.
