Marcos Maintains Confidence in Interior Secretary Amid Fugitive Escapes

Manila:President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. maintains his trust in Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla despite the escape of several high-profile fugitives, as confirmed by Malacañang on Wednesday.

According to Philippines News agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated there is no indication that Secretary Remulla has lost the President's trust and confidence. Castro emphasized this during a briefing at the Palace, addressing concerns following Secretary Remulla's disclosure that fugitive businessman Charlie 'Atong' Ang reportedly left the country via a backdoor route.

Ang is facing multiple arrest warrants related to the disappearance of several cockfighting enthusiasts, known as "sabungeros." Castro noted that the Palace has not yet discussed Ang's reported escape with President Marcos, and stressed that an investigation into any lapses by authorities is necessary before accountability can be determined.

Other notable fugitives include former Ako Bicol party-list representative Zaldy Co, former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, and Senator Ronald 'Bato' Dela Rosa. Co is involved in graft-related charges, including plunder linked to anomalous flood-control projects. He was detained by Czech authorities in April and reportedly moved to France, where he is seeking political asylum. Roque is facing a qualified human trafficking case related to an illegal gaming operator hub, with an unresolved asylum application in Europe. Senator Dela Rosa is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity connected to the previous administration's anti-drug operations. He remains elusive after escaping from Senate custody during a standoff.
