Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Sunday commended boxing legend Manny Pacquiao for bringing pride and unity to the nation following his recent fight against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, which concluded in a majority draw in Las Vegas.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos expressed that Pacquiao's performance transcended the outcome of the match. "The Filipinos won! It ended in a draw, but make no mistake, Manny Pacquiao gave us something far greater than a win - pride and unity," he stated in a message shared on social media.
In the 12-round contest, the 46-year-old Pacquiao faced a formidable challenge against the younger and larger Barrios. The match results showed one judge favoring Barrios with a 115-113 score, while the other two judges scored the bout as 114-114.
President Marcos highlighted Pacquiao's resilience and determination, noting, "At 46, up against a younger and bigger opponent, he reminded the world that the Filipino spirit never backs down." Pacquiao, who is the only boxer to have won world titles in eight different weight divisions and a former senator, had not competed professionally since 2021.
The fight rekindled national enthusiasm for boxing and drew international focus on Pacquiao's illustrious career. President Marcos concluded his remarks with gratitude and anticipation, saying, "Salamat, People's Champ. We'll be ready when that rematch comes."
