Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday outlined food security, energy stability, and the protection of Southeast Asian nationals as top priorities for the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, as the Philippines assumes its chairship this year. In a video message ahead of the summit here, Marcos emphasized the need for stronger regional unity amid mounting global challenges.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos stated, "This year, the Philippines carries with pride the responsibility of shaping the future of the region," highlighting that it has been nine years since the country last hosted the regional gathering. He noted that ASEAN has demonstrated resilience in recent years but stressed that 'our work is far from over' as the bloc navigates an increasingly complex global environment requiring sustained cooperation.
Under the theme 'Navigating Our Future, Together,' Marcos conveyed the Philippines' commitment to steering ASEAN toward a 'peaceful, prosperous, and people-centered' future anchored on unity and ASEAN centrality. The President identified energy security as a key agenda, particularly in light of global supply disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He expressed his intention to lead discussions on how the region can bolster regional preparedness, ensure stable energy supply, and accelerate energy diversification to reduce vulnerability to external shocks.
Food security will also be a major focus, with Marcos advocating for measures to maintain the free flow of essential goods and strengthen support for farmers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). He underscored the importance of safeguarding ASEAN nationals working and living abroad, recognizing their contributions to regional economies and stressing that their safety is equally important.
Additionally, the President welcomed the anticipated full membership of Timor-Leste in ASEAN, describing it as a sign of the bloc's continued relevance and commitment to multilateral cooperation. ASEAN leaders are expected to discuss key regional and global issues during the summit, including economic resilience, security cooperation, and humanitarian concerns.
Marcos is expected to arrive at the summit venue on Wednesday evening after a series of engagements in Metro Manila. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) noted that all ASEAN leaders will attend the summit, except for Myanmar, which will be represented by its foreign minister. Marcos reiterated the Philippines' dedication to promoting ASEAN's founding principles of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and cooperation. He voiced his vision for an ASEAN where its peoples enjoy a secure, peaceful, and stable future.
The Philippines last hosted the ASEAN Summit in 2017.
