Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has called on local government officials to actively participate in the fight against corruption and work towards restoring public trust in government institutions. This appeal was made during the oath-taking ceremony of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) National Executive Board and the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) National Executive Officers held at Malaca±an Palace.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos acknowledged the growing frustration among the public regarding reports of corruption within the government. He addressed local chief executives, emphasizing the various challenges the nation faces and the collective disappointment over persistent reports of irregularities.
The President reiterated his administration's commitment to maintaining integrity and promoting good governance. He emphasized that in the "New Philippines," there is no room for corruption and deceit, urging officials to take responsibility for eradicating the culture of corruption that undermines public trust and hampers the nation's progress.
Drawing from his experience as a former governor of Ilocos Norte, President Marcos expressed understanding of the challenges faced by local governments. He encouraged local officials to remain dedicated to their responsibilities and to continue working towards improving the lives of Filipinos, serving as examples that public service can be both honest and hopeful.
In response to recent revelations of alleged kickback schemes in multi-billion-peso flood control projects involving public officials and private contractors, President Marcos announced the creation of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI). This body is tasked with investigating irregularities in flood control and related projects over the past decade and recommending charges against those found liable.
