Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is advocating for a long-term response plan to ensure the safety of residents affected by the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island. The plan focuses on identifying secure evacuation sites and establishing permanent relocation areas for those displaced by the natural disaster.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) has confirmed that during a meeting held in Malaca±ang, Manila, President Marcos stressed the importance of keeping the composition of the proposed National Task Force on Kanlaon small. He emphasized that the Department of National Defense-Office of Civil Defense (DND-OCD) should lead the initiative.
President Marcos highlighted the necessity of determining the locations for evacuation centers and underscored the importance of close coordination with local governments. He remarked, "They already have some proposals. Tingnan lang natin kung talagang (Let's see if) it's scientifically correct in terms of the choice. And then [let's see] how we regulate the rebuilding in the different towns."
The President also pointed out the need to move residents away from danger zones and construct large, secure evacuation centers to ensure their protection during future eruptions. He acknowledged the effective collaboration between national and local governments, which has been instrumental in providing assistance to the affected areas.
Additionally, President Marcos urged relevant agencies to continue their support for the localities. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported ongoing geological activity, noting that the eastern side of Kanlaon Volcano is inflating, particularly at the upper slopes, with nine tremors recorded over the past 24 hours. An explosive eruption had previously occurred on December 9, 2024.
