Manila: The city government of Marikina, in collaboration with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), has inaugurated two public utility vehicle (PUV) stops designed to enhance the commuting experience for residents. The newly opened stops aim to provide a safe, convenient, and accessible travel experience, particularly for vulnerable sectors such as persons with disabilities (PWDs) and bikers.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marikina Mayor Maan Teodoro emphasized the importance of the project, noting that the PUV stops were a result of close coordination with the DOTr. She highlighted that out of six PUV stops established in Metro Manila, Marikina is fortunate to host two, with locations beside Concepcion Elementary School and near San Roque Elementary School. Mayor Teodoro expressed that the project aligns with the city's sustainability goals and commitment to accessibility.
The PUV stops are equipped with various features to cater to all commuters. These include seating for PWDs, pregnant individuals, and senior citizens, as well as security cameras, charging ports, bike repair tools, lighting systems, and solar panels. Additionally, the stops incorporate concrete bollards, tactile pavers for the visually impaired, advertisement panels, maps, and PWD-friendly ramps to ensure inclusivity and safety.
DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez acknowledged the proactive role of Mayor Teodoro and the local government in the project's development. He stated that the initiative was made possible through their dedicated efforts to meet the needs of Marikina's constituents.
