Surigao del norte: The Maritime Law Enforcement Team (MLET) of the Philippine National Police Maritime Group successfully apprehended two individuals involved in the illegal transportation of diesel fuel in Claver, Surigao del Norte.

According to Philippines News Agency, the MLET discovered a cargo vessel in Barangay Hayanggabon loaded with approximately 2,200 liters of diesel fuel, valued at over PHP1.1 million, lacking the necessary documentation. The seized cargo vessel, along with two motor pumps and a heavy hose, is now under the custody of authorities.

This operation is part of the PNP Maritime Group's intensified efforts to combat fuel smuggling and other maritime violations within the Caraga Region. The strategic location of Surigao del Norte, particularly its coastal towns like Claver, has made it a transit point for smuggled fuel due to its proximity to major shipping lanes.

Authorities noted that the suspects did not possess the required permits and documentation for transporting petroleum products. Consequently, they face charges under Batas Pambansa Bilang 33, which prohibits the unauthorized transport and trade of petroleum products.

Fuel smuggling continues to be a significant issue in the region. Government agencies are enhancing maritime patrols and inter-agency collaboration to address illegal activities and ensure adherence to regulations.
