Iloilo city: Megaworld Corp. unveiled a replica of the old Iloilo airport control tower at the Iloilo Business Park (IBP), preserving a piece of the city's aviation history within the 72-hectare township.
According to Philippines News Agency, the 12-foot-tall replica stands along the path where the airport's runway once stretched and serves as the third dedicated monument inside IBP. Architect Wilfredo Sy Jr., executive director of the Iloilo City Council Cultural Heritage Conservation Council, emphasized the historical significance of the old Mandurriao airport as Iloilo's primary gateway to the nation and the world for decades.
Sy remarked, "Through this very airfield, generations took off towards their dreams, welcomed loved ones home, and watched our city evolve. By building this tribute, you have given Iloilo's younger generation a tangible link to our history; a landmark that whispers this is where we took flight." He also noted that heritage is about maintaining the essence of a place as it progresses.
A historical marker was installed at the original control tower's site. Megaworld highlighted that the replica and marker connect past and future, reminding visitors and residents of the historical significance of the Iloilo Business Park.
The control tower replica joins other landmarks in IBP, including Plaza Delgado, honoring General Martin Delgado, and the 12-meter Pagsinapol landmark, celebrating Iloilo's culture and community. The replica is also part of the IBP Art Trail, a curated gallery showcasing the township's identity as Iloilo City's Center for Arts and Culture.
Don Earl Caagbay, Megaworld's head of estate management, stated, "The old Iloilo airport control tower replica is our way of marking a site that witnessed decades of flights and historic milestones. Today, Iloilo Business Park stands on this very ground, continuing that role by helping drive the local economy through job opportunities in retail, commerce, business, and tourism."
The old airport site, operational since 1937, was Iloilo's domestic gateway and became Western Visayas' busiest airport before ceasing operations in 2007. Megaworld revealed that the airport played roles in major historical events, including World War II and Pope John Paul II's visit in 1981. Today, the site hosts modern office towers, hotels, residential condominiums, and arts establishments.
