Manila: National and local government officials on Wednesday visited Tartar Creek in Las Pi±as City to assess the results of the cleanup drive as part of the "Bayanihan sa Estero" program. The assessment was led by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Don Artes, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon, and Las Pi±as City Mayor April Aguilar at Tartar Creek in Barangay Pampalona Tres and Barangay Talon Dos.
According to Philippines News Agency, Artes highlighted that these cleanup efforts align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s socioeconomic plan to reduce obstructions, improve waterway flow, and mitigate flooding in Metro Manila. Artes stated, "It's good to see the before and after situation of Tartar Creek. The MMDA ensures that waterways are free from debris, garbage, and silt, allowing rainwater to flow more efficiently. This leads to reduced flooding risks, a cleaner environment, and improved health and safety for residents."
DPWH Secretary Dizon noted that projects such as drainage systems, pumping stations, flood control structures, and water retention facilities form part of a long-term strategy to support Metro Manila's development. "The DPWH will continue to work with MMDA and all LGUs to implement comprehensive and sustainable infrastructure projects designed to significantly reduce flood risks across the region," he said.
Mayor Aguilar expressed gratitude towards the MMDA for their contribution to the city's environmental efforts. "We deeply appreciate the commitment of MMDA for their invaluable assistance in cleaning our creek and for standing with us in our efforts to build a cleaner, safer, and more resilient city. This initiative not only helps restore the natural flow of our creeks but also reduces the risk of flooding in Las Pi±as," she remarked.
During the cleanup event, the MMDA distributed lily pots and charcoal briquettes made from processed water hyacinths collected from the creek.
In a related development, Artes and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno visited the Paco pumping station in Manila, where the DPWH commenced the installation of a stop log as a temporary measure for a damaged floodgate responsible for flooding in Barangay 827. The installation of the stop log is expected to be completed in two weeks, while the full rehabilitation of the Paco pumping station is slated for completion by mid-March 2026.
