Malaca±ang: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is seeking more dialogues with motorcycle rider groups, cyclists, and other mobility groups before issuing a resolution on the exclusive motorcycle and bicycle lanes in Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).
According to Philippines News Agency, MMDA Traffic Discipline Office head Victor Maria Nu±ez, in a press conference on Thursday, revealed that a dialogue with motorcycle groups held on Wednesday showed a division among them regarding the exclusive motorcycle lane in EDSA. While 1-Rider Partylist Rep. Rodge Gutierrez opposed the lane, arguing it could affect motorcycle taxis and delivery services, Motorcycle Philippines Federation (MCPF) President Arturo Sta. Cruz supported the lane to ensure rider safety.
Motorcycle organizations have been invited to provide their inputs and suggestions, with some proposing that motorcycles be allowed on EDSA's outermost bicycle lanes. Nu±ez mentioned that bollards separating cyclists from other traffic would need to be removed as part of the reconstruction process.
Cyclists and other mobility groups are also expected to contribute feedback and suggestions before decisions are finalized regarding the bicycle lanes on EDSA. Nu±ez emphasized the importance of listening to all parties involved before making any final decisions.
As preparations for the EDSA rebuild, beginning June 13, the MMDA announced several changes to EDSA's traffic policies. These include the reimplementation of the exclusive motorcycle lane, the no-contact apprehension policy (NCAP), and the EDSA-exclusive odd-even coding scheme.
The EDSA rebuild, slated for completion in 2027, entails constructing sturdier pavements, laying asphalt, improving canals and waterways to combat flooding, and constructing better sidewalks for pedestrians.
