Iloilo: The Department of Agriculture has introduced a state-of-the-art mobile soil laboratory (MSL) in Western Visayas, bringing enhanced accessibility to soil testing and analysis for the region's farmers. This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide accurate, science-based data aimed at improving land productivity and sustainability.
According to Philippines News Agency, the PHP42 million MSL, developed by the DA Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), is equipped to conduct 44 different chemical, physical, and microbiological soil tests. These tests are designed to offer farmers precise insights to better manage and conserve their land. Babylou Magdaug, the DA Western Visayas chief of the Regional Soils Laboratory, stated that the mobile lab could furnish test results within five days, and possibly even within the same day if samples are pre-collected.
This initiative is expected to enable farmers to adopt data-driven crop management practices, optimizing their use of fertilizers and improving soil conservation. The free soil testing service is available to farmers growing rice, corn, high-value crops, vegetables, and root crops.
The deployment of MSLs to regional offices across the Philippines is a key component of the National Soil Health Program Strategy 2, which focuses on monitoring soil health. The 10-wheeler truck mobile laboratory arrived in Iloilo on August 14 and is stationed at the Western Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center in Barangay Hamungaya, within Iloilo City's Jaro district. The facility is set to become operational in October.
