MPBL Cancels Friday Games Due to Tropical Depression Isang

Manila: The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) was forced to call off its scheduled Friday night games due to stormy weather throughout the day. The heavy rains brought about by the southwest monsoon, amplified by newly developed Tropical Depression Isang, flooded much of Metro Manila, prompting the regional league not to push through with its supposed games at the Marikina Sports Center.

According to Philippines News Agency, the affected games included matchups between Davao Occidental and Quezon City at 4 p.m., Rizal province and Bacolod at 6 p.m., and Marikina and San Juan at 8 p.m. These games were of significant importance for teams like the Tigers, Golden Coolers, and Knights. Davao Occidental needed a win to force a three-way tie with Imus and Sarangani for 10th place in the South Division at 9-14, with Cebu just behind at 9-15.

Additionally, Rizal, currently in fourth place in the South at 14-8, was looking to improve its chances of securing a better playoff seeding. In the main game, San Juan aimed to formally clinch a playoff spot and compete with Abra and Nueva Ecija for the top seed in the North Division. The league's format has the top six teams per division at the end of the regular season getting outright places in the playoffs, with the Top 4 per group securing homecourt advantage in the first round. Meanwhile, the 7th to 10th seeds per division will engage in play-in games to determine the final teams entering the playoffs.

The league has not yet announced new dates for the postponed games, but updates are expected in due course.
