Vigan City: National Capital Region's (NCR) Titus Rafael Sia and Sophia Rose Garra set new records in the 65th Palarong Pambansa swimming competition at Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium here Tuesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Sia of Xavier School won the elementary boys' 200m freestyle in 2 minutes and 7.86 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 2:08.12 set by Central Luzon's Rafael Barreto in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental in 2013. Findly Jake Mackenzie from NCR secured the second position with a time of 2:12.01, followed by Caraga Region's Cosme Calejesan III at 2:12.89.
In another achievement, Sia also broke the 100m backstroke record with a time of 1:05.44, previously held by NCR's Martin Isaak Seth in the 2015 edition in Tagum, Davao del Norte. Calabarzon's Arc Renzy earned the silver medal with a time of 1:10.36, and teammate Marcus Jared Dula took the bronze with 1:11.36.
In the elementary girls' category, Garra of De La Salle University won the 100m backstroke in 1:07.61, improving on her record of 1:08.50 set in Cebu City last year. Sophia Nicole Obrense of Calabarzon and Kurile Miles Hechanova of Central Luzon claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Garra also excelled in the 200m freestyle, finishing in 2:17.62, ahead of Hechanova and Breanna Aaliyah Erno of Caraga.
Calabarzon's Reinielle Jan Miko Trinidad achieved a remarkable win in the secondary boys' 50m butterfly, setting a new meet record of 25.23 seconds, surpassing Alberto Jose Amaro II's 25.25 time in Cebu City. Trinidad outperformed NCR's Jamesray Ajido and Patrick Anthony Vidal.
NCR teams also broke records in the secondary boys' and girls' 4x50m medley relay events. The boys' team, comprising Ryan Zach Danzel Belen, Joaquin Seraphin Taguinod, Patrick Anthony Vidal, and Kobie Briel, clocked 1:46.92. The girls' team, consisting of Kristine Jane Uy, Clara Ysabeka Delos Santos, Savannah Zoey Oliveros, and Raina Samantha Leyran, finished in 2:03.04.
As of 6 p.m., NCR leads the medal tally with 19 gold, 13 silver, and four bronze medals, followed by Calabarzon with 12 gold, 14 silver, and seven bronze medals. Other regions in the standings include Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Central Visayas, CAR, Bicol Region, Davao Region, Caraga, and Eastern Visayas.
