New Substation Inaugurated to Boost Power Reliability in Sual

Sual: The Central Pangasinan Electric Cooperative (Cenpelco) inaugurated a 20-megavolt ampere (MVA) substation, funded by the Department of Energy, along Zigzag Road, Poblacion in Sual. The event marked a significant step towards enhancing the power infrastructure in the region, which is expected to support local economic activities and contribute to the growth of the municipality.

According to Philippines News Agency, the National Electrification Administration (NEA) administrator Antonio Mariano Almeda emphasized the importance of this development in a message read by NEA Department Manager of Engineering Eric Villar during the inauguration ceremony. The new substation is seen as both a symbol of progress and a reminder of the shared commitment to advancing the rural electrification program.

Cenpelco General Manager Rodrigo Corpuz stated that the Sual Substation, Cenpelco's 13th substation, will exclusively serve the town of Sual. He explained that funding for the substation came from the Energy Regulation 1-94, which allocates one centavo per kilowatt-hour generated by a power plant in a town to the Development Fund and the Electrification Fund. The accumulated fund from the Sual Power Plant's operation financed the substation.

Corpuz highlighted that the new substation would provide a more reliable and stable power source for the locality. Previously, Sual relied on the Labrador substation, which caused power interruptions during maintenance or issues in the feeder line. The new facility aims to address these challenges and ensure a consistent power supply for Sual town.

In addition to the Sual project, Cenpelco is planning to construct more substations to meet the growing demand from consumers and accommodate future large loads. Currently, all local governments under Cenpelco's jurisdiction have their own substations, except for Basista and Aguilar towns, where plans are underway to establish substations soon.

The substation project in Sual began in May 2025 but faced delays due to typhoons and heavy rains last year. It was completed in April this year, with the inauguration scheduled after receiving approval to connect from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.
