Visayas: The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has extended the yellow alert status for the Visayas grid on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., from an earlier schedule of 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
According to Philippines News Agency, this extension followed the forced outage of Units 1 and 4 of the diesel-powered Power Barge (PB) 101, operated by the NGCP; Unit 3 of the oil-fired Panay Diesel Power Plant 3; and Unit 5 of the diesel-fired Cebu Private Power Corp. These disruptions have reduced the capacity in the transmission grid by about 29.6 megawatts (MW).
As of 6 p.m., the transmission grid's available capacity is approximately 2,716 MW, while peak demand is expected to reach 2,500 MW. A yellow alert status is raised when the operating margin is inadequate to meet the grid's contingent demand.
The NGCP highlighted that eight power plants have been unavailable for the Visayas grid this month, leading to the issuance of the yellow alert for most of the month. This is in addition to the 21 other plants that have been on forced outage since 2021. Furthermore, 17 power plants are currently operating on derated capacities, bringing the total unavailable capacity to the grid to about 813.7 MW.
