Manila: No Filipino national was among the 10 deported by the United States to the southern African state of Eswatini, the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. confirmed Saturday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the embassy verified with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement that no Filipino citizen was involved in any third-country deportation from the United States. It was revealed that one individual was unable to establish Philippine citizenship and therefore could not be deported to the Philippines.
Earlier reports, quoting a US lawyer for two Vietnamese nationals, suggested that the deported group included "three Vietnamese, one Filipino, one Cambodian, and four to six others." However, the embassy's statement clarified the situation.
The embassy emphasized its ongoing engagement with US authorities to ensure the well-being of Filipino citizens in the United States and expressed readiness to receive all Filipino citizens under a final order of removal.
The government of Eswatini confirmed that 10 foreign nationals arrived in the African Kingdom on Monday. They are currently kept in a secured area separate from the public while arrangements are made for their return to their countries of origin.
The deportation aligns with the Trump administration's strategy of striking deportation deals with third countries as part of its immigration crackdown.
