Ottawa: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday (Canada time) dismissed as 'nonsense' the calls to oust him due to allegedly 'selective justice' and still unresolved cases of corruption in government. 'That makes absolutely no sense,' Marcos said, noting that he is the only president who exposed anomalies in state-funded flood control projects.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos stated that irregularities in flood control projects were only disclosed during his administration, emphasizing that past presidents had failed to address the issue. He acknowledged that the government is 'not done yet' in holding accountable all those involved in the flood control scandal. Marcos expressed that, unfortunately, the investigation is uncovering issues that extend beyond his term.

He further mentioned that former President Rodrigo Duterte was also aware of the significant problems related to flood control projects but did not take substantial action to resolve the matter. 'Having acknowledged it, it did not find accountability in anybody. So, I guess that was left up to me to do. And so we are still doing it. We're still working on it,' Marcos stated.

Marcos highlighted the deep-seated system of corruption, which he believes requires not only structural changes in government operations and budgeting but also a change in attitude. In September 2025, he issued Executive Order 94, establishing the now-defunct Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) to investigate the questionable flood control projects.

The ICI has made significant progress, having submitted its accomplishment report to Marcos. The report outlines its activities and achievements from September 15, 2025, to January 18, 2026, including nine referrals to the Office of the Ombudsman, coordinating the referral of 66 individuals to the Department of Justice, and contributing to the freezing of 6,692 bank accounts valued at PHP24.7 billion.
