Northern Samar: The Northern Samar provincial government has intensified efforts to prevent and control the spread of African swine fever (ASF) in hog farms after reporting 14 confirmed cases of the highly-contagious disease in three towns. Provincial Agriculture Officer Jose Luis Acompa±ado said in a phone call Thursday that they launched field surveillance in towns where unusual hog mortalities were reported.

According to Philippines News Agency, the official reported nine confirmed ASF cases in Las Navas town, three in Catubig, and two in Laoang, citing laboratory findings. The provincial government has been coordinating with the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) to enhance laboratory testing, rapid response capabilities, and data-sharing mechanisms, ensuring that Northern Samar remains prepared to handle potential outbreaks effectively.

All local ASF monitoring teams are directed to 'remain vigilant, ensuring that any potential cases are addressed swiftly and effectively.' 'While Northern Samar remains committed to ASF prevention and control, the risk of outbreaks persists. The success of these efforts relies heavily on the cooperation of local hog raisers, municipal authorities, and all stakeholders in promptly reporting cases and adhering to strict biosecurity measures,' Acompa±ado added.

Earlier, the provincial government of Northern Samar issued an executive order prohibiting the movement of live pigs and pork products in three towns for at least a month to combat the spread of ASF. Executive Order No. 25-02-01, signed by Governor Edwin Ongchuan on Feb. 10, also mandates the establishment of quarantine checkpoints in the boundaries of Las Navas, Catubig, and Laoang towns.

ASF is a highly contagious disease with a 100 percent mortality rate in hogs, severely impacting the swine industry.
