Iloilo city: The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is actively working to educate the public about the impending phaseout of 2G and 3G mobile networks, scheduled for completion by next year.
According to Philippines News Agency, Deo Virgil Tan, Legal Officer VI of the NTC regional office, announced in a virtual press briefing that the 3G mobile network is set to be decommissioned nationwide by December 31, 2026, followed by the 2G network. Tan highlighted the necessity of this shift, especially for senior citizens who still prefer the older networks. The transition is intended to pave the way for more advanced 4G and 5G networks.
Tan reassured the public that affordable mobile phones compatible with the newer 4G and 5G networks are available, alleviating concerns about potential costs. He noted that in Iloilo City, the transition has already begun, with residents adapting to the new networks.
To support this shift, Tan called on telecommunication companies, such as Globe and Smart, to enhance their customer service and address possible inquiries from the public. Meanwhile, NTC engineer Carnille Caesar Dalumpines confirmed that emergency numbers and police hotlines will remain operational during the network upgrade. Additionally, SIM card users will have the flexibility to retain their current registered number with the NTC or opt for a new SIM card.
