Remulla Sworn In as Ombudsman Amid Controversies

Manila: Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla formally took his oath of office before Acting Chief Justice Marvic Leonen at the Supreme Court session hall on Thursday. In an interview after the ceremony, Remulla stated that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has directed him to address the current controversies facing the government.

According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla emphasized that the President provided no specific orders but expressed the need to resolve the ongoing issues to better the country. Remulla also addressed criticisms from his detractors, highlighting the distinction between political and legal spheres, and called for collective efforts for the nation's benefit.

Remulla announced that the Office of the Ombudsman will prioritize the investigation into the flood control corruption scandal. He indicated that cases might be filed in the coming weeks, contingent on the availability of sufficient evidence. The Ombudsman stressed the importance of building strong cases based on evidence rather than focusing on individuals implicated.

The flood control project investigations will be thorough, with no one spared from scrutiny. Remulla mentioned the establishment of new standards at the Office of the Ombudsman to ensure comprehensive investigations and prosecutions of those who violate the law and abuse their responsibilities.

Remulla also plans to review the Pharmally case, which involves the procurement of overpriced Covid-19 supplies, expressing concern over its apparent neglect. He aims to ensure that significant cases are not forgotten.

Beyond his prosecutorial duties, Remulla intends to make recommendations to regulatory offices to enhance service efficiency. He noted the failure of regulatory agencies to require telecommunications companies to cooperate with the government in combating child pornography and online abuse, urging them to improve their systems to help capture offenders.
