Manila: The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Monday announced that it has implemented contingency measures in preparation for a potential increase in the unrest at Mayon Volcano.
According to Philippines News Agency, OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo detailed that resources have been strategically positioned, and contingency plans are in place, especially for local government units (LGUs) involved in managing evacuations and handling extended permanent danger zones. Castillo emphasized the continuous coordination between the OCD, other response agencies, and LGUs to address the situation effectively.
Despite these preparations, Castillo noted that the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology currently does not foresee the need to raise the Alert Level. However, he assured that response agencies are prepared should the situation escalate.
Mayon Volcano, recognized for its symmetrical cone shape, is one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, with a history of abrupt eruptions leading to ashfall, lava flows, and hazardous mudflows. Recently, it emitted significant ashfall, affecting nearby communities.
