Manila: Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno has reiterated the enforcement of the agency's one-strike policy for personnel involved in corruption or smuggling activities, underscoring the ongoing battle against smuggling.
According to Philippines News Agency, Commissioner Nepomuceno, as he embarked on his second year leading the BOC, emphasized that any personnel found engaging in acts that compromise the integrity of the Bureau will face immediate relief or removal from their positions. He urged the public to actively participate in the BOC's anti-smuggling efforts through the Isumbong Kay Commissioner platform, accessible at https://isumbongkaycomm.customs.gov.ph/.
"The fight against smuggling is not the Bureau of Customs' battle alone. If you have information, report it. Through 'Isumbong Kay Commissioner,' every credible tip can help us uncover smuggling activities and hold violators accountable," Nepomuceno stated in a news release.
He declared an all-out war against smugglers, promising a more determined approach in pursuing smugglers while holding BOC personnel accountable. Recent seizures of illicit cigarettes worth billions serve as a declaration of the Bureau's zero-tolerance policy toward smuggling and corruption.
Commissioner Nepomuceno instructed all collection districts to enhance intelligence gathering, risk profiling, and enforcement operations. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation with the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy, Philippine National Police, National Bureau of Investigation, local government units, and other law enforcement partners.
"There is no longer any room for complacency. As smugglers evolve their methods, Customs must be faster, smarter, and more coordinated. That is why we will further intensify intelligence-sharing and joint operations with our partner agencies to thwart these illegal activities and hold those behind them accountable," he remarked.
Nepomuceno further highlighted the Bureau's commitment to modernization and digitalization, asserting that the time for action is now to sustain the momentum of their ongoing reforms.
