Manila: Enduring peace can be built through meaningful dialogue, mutual trust and genuine partnership, Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento said on Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the country will observe the 15th anniversary of the signing of the 2011 memorandum of agreement between the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Cordillera Bodong Administration-Cordillera People's Liberation Army (CBA-CPLA) on July 4. The pact, known as the 2011 GPH-CBA-CPLA's Memorandum of Agreement Towards the CPLA's Final Disposition of Arms and Its Transformation into a Potent Socio-Economic Unarmed Force, formally concludes the Mount Data Peace Accords, signed on September 13, 1986, which ended hostilities between the GPH and the CPLA.
"Over the past 15 years, the commitments embodied in the Agreement have translated into meaningful and measurable gains-from the successful disposition of arms and forces, the socio-economic transformation of former CBA-CPLA members, and the implementation of community-driven development initiatives, to the continued delivery of education, health, and livelihood programs," Sarmiento said in a news release. The accomplishments demonstrate that sustainable peace can be best realized through inclusivity, cooperation, and shared responsibility.
The outcomes are considered major milestones in the Philippine peace process and stand as a testament to the collective commitment, perseverance, and shared vision of all stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to transform peace commitments into tangible gains for the people of the Cordillera. "We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all our stakeholders-the CBA-CPLA, national government agencies, local government units, civil society organizations, development partners, and communities in the Cordillera Region-for their invaluable contributions in making these accomplishments possible," the OPAPRU chief stated.
