Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Thursday its ongoing efforts to build a case against individuals potentially involved in facilitating the alleged escape of Senator Ronald 'Bato' Dela Rosa. This development emerged after Dela Rosa appeared at a Senate session on May 13, despite an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
According to Philippines News Agency, the DOJ mentioned that the Philippine National Police (PNP) might consider refiling the obstruction of justice case against Senator Robin Padilla. Padilla is accused of assisting Dela Rosa in evading the ICC-issued arrest warrant.
Justice Undersecretary Ian Norman Dato, during a press conference, stated that a panel of prosecutors carried out an ocular inspection of the Senate premises on June 30, 2026. The panel has also formally requested relevant documentary evidence, including CCTV footage and other materials essential for the investigation.
Dato further explained that the case build-up is ongoing, focusing on determining the liability of individuals who may have facilitated Senator Dela Rosa's escape. However, the DOJ clarified that the PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has not yet resubmitted the obstruction of justice complaint against those involved in Dela Rosa's escape.
The complaint was previously referred back to the CIDG in accordance with Department Circular No. 20. This circular mandates collaboration between prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to ensure a robust case before filing.
