Caraga: Severe Tropical Storm Opong has displaced a total of 438 families, or 1,354 individuals, across various municipalities in the province of Dinagat Islands. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) reported that these families are currently taking shelter in evacuation centers set up throughout the province.
According to Philippines News Agency, the PDRRMC announced that Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) teams are scheduled for deployment by local emergency operations centers to evaluate the actual impact of Severe Tropical Storm Opong in the region. It was further noted that all national roads in the province remain passable and accessible.
The storm has also affected sea travel, with the suspension of routes from Dinagat to other areas in Surigao del Norte still in effect. However, the Coast Guard Station on Siargao Island lifted the temporary suspension after Tropical Cyclone Bulletin No. 17 indicated that the island was no longer under any wind signal. Despite this, the CGS Surigao del Norte stated that travel suspensions from the province to Visayas and Luzon remain.
Consequently, hundreds of passengers and rolling cargoes have been stranded at major ports in Surigao City and Agusan del Norte. The Department of Social Welfare and Development, alongside the Port Management Office, provided 155 packs of ready-to-eat food to stranded passengers at Nasipit Port in Agusan del Norte on Thursday night. As of 6 a.m. Friday, Lipata Port in Surigao City reported 104 passengers and 36 rolling cargoes stranded inside the port, with an additional 275 cargoes and 540 passengers outside. Surigao Port also reported 21 stranded passengers.
In Zamboanga City, classes at all levels were suspended on Friday afternoon due to adverse weather conditions. Mayor Khymer Olaso issued the suspension following advice from the state weather bureau, which predicted cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms as a result of the southwest monsoon, locally known as "habagat." The sudden downpour on Friday morning also led to flash flooding at the government-run Western Mindanao State University in Barangay Baliwasan.
