‘Opong’ Halts Sea Travels in Surigao Norte, Classes in Dinagat

Surigao del norte: The Coast Guard Station in Surigao del Norte has temporarily suspended the voyages of all vessels and watercraft, regardless of type or size, traveling from the province to areas affected by Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name Bualoi) on Thursday morning.

According to Philippines News Agency, the suspension of travel follows the issuance of Tropical Cyclone Bulletin No. 7 by PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) on Thursday. The bulletin hoisted Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal Nos. 1 and 2, impacting the routes and destinations of vessels departing from Surigao del Norte.

Roll-on roll-off (RORO) vessels traveling from Surigao Port to Dinagat Islands and from Lipata Port to San Ricardo in the Visayas may only sail when the conditions specified in Paragraph V (D) of Memorandum Circular No. 02-23 are strictly met. These conditions include not carrying passengers except for drivers and rolling cargoes, and ensuring that rolling cargoes do not carry dangerous materials.

The Coast Guard Station also advised residents in coastal areas to stay alert and monitor the latest weather updates. Similar temporary suspensions of sea travel have been issued by coast guard stations in Dinagat Islands, Siargao Island, and Surigao City.

As of Thursday morning, several local government units in Dinagat Islands have ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in public and private schools to ensure safety due to the threat of Opong. The affected LGUs include Loreto, Tubajon, Cagdianao, Libjo, and San Jose. Barangay officials and disaster offices have been instructed to ensure evacuation centers are ready and to monitor weather advisories from PAGASA and other agencies.
