Manila: Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. on Monday emphasized the strategic nature of the P20 rice program under the 'Benteng Bigas Meron (BBM) Na', describing it as more than just a subsidy for vulnerable Filipinos.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PHP20 per kilo rice initiative has benefited over 6 million individuals across 82 provinces, highlighting its extensive reach and influence. The program targets various groups, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), solo parents, recipients of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), minimum wage earners, farmers, fishers, transport workers, and education personnel.

Tiu Laurel underscored the program's role in stabilizing prices, shielding vulnerable households, and ensuring a steady market for farmers. He stated, "The P20 Rice Project is not merely a subsidy - It is a strategic intervention to stabilize prices, protect vulnerable households, and guarantee a reliable market for our farmers. We cannot afford to slow down."

The Department of Agriculture (DA) expanded the BBM Na program in Roxas City, Capiz, during its 125th founding anniversary at the Capiztahan Festival. During the initial rollout, 1,000 beneficiaries from vulnerable families accessed the government-subsidized rice.

Tiu Laurel noted that the program's expansion not only mitigates the impact of recent oil price increases but also advances food security objectives. He commented, "At a time when global supply disruptions and price volatility continue to challenge food systems, we must decisively pursue President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s flagship food security program."

The PHP20 per kilo rice is distributed through 661 Kadiwa ng Pangulo centers, kiosks, and other DA-accredited sites nationwide.
