Manila: The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has confirmed its plans to acquire an airborne early warning and control system (AEWACS) to enhance the security of the country's airspace. The proposal for this acquisition has been submitted as part of the PAF's Re-Horizon H3 capability list.
According to Philippines News Agency, PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo announced that the PAF has put forward the proposal to higher authorities. The AEWACS system is expected to provide airborne surveillance, command, control, and communications capabilities, crucial for comprehensive air battle management. However, Castillo refrained from disclosing further details, directing inquiries to the Department of National Defense (DND).
DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. emphasized the importance of integrating the proposed multi-role fighters (MRF) program with an airborne warning and control system (AWACS) and aerial tankers. This integration is aimed at ensuring the MRF program operates as a complete force package. Teodoro stated that the acquisition of MRFs must be accompanied by AWACS capabilities to fully demonstrate their operational potential.
AWACS, synonymous with AEWCS, are significant for their ability to detect aircraft, ships, vehicles, and missiles over long distances, serving as surveillance assets and directing friendly forces. Teodoro also highlighted the necessity of tanker aircraft to support the MRFs, extending their operational range through mid-air refueling.
Aerial tankers facilitate the transfer of fuel to fighter jets and attack aircraft using a probe-and-drogue system, which is essential for sustaining extended missions.
