Manila: The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has enthusiastically welcomed South Korea's commitment to deliver the first batch of 12 FA-50 Block 70 light combat aircraft acquired from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) by 2028. This strategic acquisition is expected to significantly bolster the Philippines' air defense capabilities.
According to Philippines News Agency, South Korean Ambassador to Manila, Lee Sang-hwa, announced during a press luncheon that Seoul aims to deliver three of the 12 FA-50 aircraft to the Philippines before President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s term concludes. PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo expressed appreciation for this development, emphasizing the importance of strong regional security cooperation.
The additional FA-50s are anticipated to considerably enhance the country's air defense capabilities, supporting the mission of safeguarding Philippine sovereignty and territorial integrity. The $700 million contract for acquiring the 12 FA-50 Block 70 aircraft was signed last month, marking a significant step in strengthening the nation's defense infrastructure.
The acquisition package includes mission equipment, integrated logistics support, as well as a training and logistics information system. The South Korean-made combat jets, representing the latest advancements in the FA-50 platform, are equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, modern radar systems, and an extended operational range. Delivery of these aircraft will occur in phases over the next five years, with full completion expected by 2030.
