Manila: The weather bureau on Tuesday announced a temporary suspension of the heat index updates due to the official onset of the rainy season.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) emphasized the importance of focusing on accurate and timely information related to hazards and potential impacts associated with the wet season. The daily monitoring of the heat index and issuance of forecasts is scheduled to resume on March 1, 2026, coinciding with the projected start of the hot dry months.
Despite the halt in updates, heat index information from PAGASA's automatic weather stations and iHeatMap remains accessible through the agency's website. PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando highlighted indicators prior to the rainy season declaration, including the persistence of low-level southwesterly wind flow in the western section of Luzon and the weakening of easterly winds. Servando also noted that PAGASA considers rainfall amounts recorded in the western parts of Visayas and Luzon.
PAGASA does not anticipate the entire month of June to be continuously rainy, as it is common to experience breaks or sunny days. Meanwhile, PAGASA Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section chief Ana Lisa Solis indicated that the country may experience one or two tropical cyclones this month. She warned that, in the absence of a tropical cyclone, a low-pressure area could still bring rains and potentially cause floods, advising the public to take precautions.
