Manila: Malaca±ang on Wednesday called on the public to participate in the 'Bakunahan sa Purok ni Juan,' an intensified measles catch-up immunization program.
According to Philippines News Agency, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the measles catch-up inoculation drive is being carried out in health centers across the cities of Caloocan, Quezon, Taguig, Manila, Mandaluyong, and Las Pi±as. Castro emphasized the importance of public awareness and participation, noting that some parents or guardians might not be aware of the ongoing immunization efforts.
Castro encouraged parents or guardians to take advantage of the vaccination opportunities available at local health centers, particularly for measles, which remains a significant health concern. She also announced plans for another immunization activity targeting other regions in the second quarter of 2025.
The 'Bakunahan sa Purok ni Juan' initiative seeks to boost immunization coverage and protect communities from vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles. The Department of Health (DOH) had previously urged the public to ensure children under 2 years old receive the measles-rubella vaccine, emphasizing the highly contagious nature of the disease.
Data from the DOH indicates a total of 922 measles-rubella cases recorded from January 1 to March 1 this year, marking a 35 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. The rise in cases was noted particularly in Metro Manila, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos, Bicol, Western Visayas, and Soccsksargen, with 68 percent of cases occurring in unvaccinated individuals.
In addition to the immunization effort, Castro highlighted several government initiatives aimed at mitigating heat-related health risks. The DOH has issued a memorandum detailing strategies to combat the effects of a dangerous heat index, including the establishment of BUCAS centers, public health literacy programs, cooling centers, and climate-resilient hydration stations.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) declared the start of the dry season on Wednesday, signaling the end of the northeast monsoon (amihan) over most parts of the country.
