Palawan PDLs Craft ‘Palaspas’ for Palm Sunday

Palawan: Some persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Puerto Princesa City Jail Male Dormitory have begun preparing 'palaspas' (palm fronds) for Palm Sunday, which marks the start of the Holy Week for Catholics. The finished product will be blessed during the Palm Sunday Mass, commemorating Jesus Christ's entry into Jerusalem, where He was greeted by people waving palm branches.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) 4B (Mimaropa) information officer Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo stated that aside from showcasing their artistry, the palaspas serves as a symbol of welcoming Christ into both hearts and lives. Anglo also urged PDLs that aside from commemorating the Holy Week with palaspas decorations, it is also important to always keep faith in God.

For 38-year-old PDL Michael (not his real name), making palm fronds and bringing them into the church during Palm Sunday has been a way of life for his family before he was jailed. He mentioned that it has become their vow to make palm fronds and go to church during Palm Sunday, always wishing for good health for himself and his family.

Meanwhile, the BJMP noted that PDLs would also take part in various Holy Week activities at the jail facilities. This includes the traditional 'pabasa' and 'via Crucis,' which were organized to help with their spiritual formation.
