Davao city: The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday reported that all patients evacuated from its three hospitals following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Davao Oriental have all returned and are tagged safe. Patients of the Davao Regional Medical Center (DRMC) in Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Davao Occidental General Hospital in Malita town; and Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City were temporarily transferred to tents and evacuation areas following the tremor that struck at 9:43 a.m. Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, some students were brought to DRMC while one patient safely delivered a baby at the hospital evacuation area after the earthquake. The DOH noted that despite being the closest hospital to the epicenter of the earthquake, more than 600 patients are safe.
The DOH is currently conducting rapid assessment across the region, adding that all its hospitals are on standby to respond to any health emergency arising from possible aftershocks. Most patients who sought medical attention experienced hyperventilation and panic attacks. It is emphasized that it is normal to feel scared, shock, or fear after a disaster, but it is important to remain calm and composed in such situations.
DOH said it is currently providing psychological first aid and psychosocial support services to patients and communities in the region.
