PBBM Appoints Ex-Senator Tolentino as New DOLE Chief

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed former senator Francis Tolentino as Acting Secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), replacing Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma. This announcement was made by Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro during a Palace press briefing.

According to Philippines News Agency, Castro expressed President Marcos Jr.'s confidence in Tolentino's ability and extensive experience to lead the DOLE effectively. Tolentino is set to take his oath of office before President Marcos at Malaca±an Palace.

The decision to appoint an acting labor secretary was triggered by Secretary Laguesma's health condition. Castro noted the necessity of appointing Tolentino due to Laguesma's inability to continue in his role, and she did not disclose any future positions for Laguesma, citing the President's discretion and Laguesma's health.

In a statement, Laguesma announced that health reasons led to his resignation and expressed gratitude to President Marcos for the opportunity to serve. He emphasized the values of integrity and compassion during his tenure and wished to leave a positive legacy.

Labor groups have reacted to the change in leadership. SENTRO expressed hope for a shift in labor governance, focusing on engagement with workers and respect for trade union rights. The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines welcomed Tolentino's appointment with optimism, anticipating a new era of dialogue and action that benefits Filipino workers and their families.
